RFID Readers, Handhelds and Sleds Read RFID Tags from Assets and Inventory

RFID readers, handhelds, and sleds are used to scan RFID tags and labels and to correlate data from assets and inventory with RFID software.

What are RFID Readers?

RFID readers are responsible for communicating with RFID tags. The purpose of this communication is to identify, classify, and locate assets and inventory.

Fixed vs. Handheld Readers

RFID readers are available in a variety of forms, including fixed readers and handhelds. Fixed RFID readers are RFID scanners that are permanently attached to a certain location, such as a doorway, table, or dock door. In certain cases, fixed readers have built-in antennas, whereas in others external antennas are used. An operator manoeuvres handheld RFID scanners to create a read zone.

RFID Handheld Overview

RFID handhelds are designed to be utilised by moving the devices about while collecting data. RFID handhelds can have built-in screens and keyboards, or they can be in a sled form factor that links to another smart device, such as a phone or tablet, through Bluetooth.

What You Should Know Regarding Fixed Readers

Fixed RFID readers are commonly employed in applications that collect data behind the scenes. For example, an RFID portal at a dock entry, so that when a pallet is shipped, the pallet is suitably marked in backend software.

Fixed RFID scanners often include one or more antennae, which can be built within the device or linked externally through a coaxial cable. RFID middleware typically facilitates in the data feed back to your business systems, such as an ERP or warehouse management system.
